Need a Navigation System? Check Out These Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals
If you need a navigation system for yourself or someone on your holiday gift list, now's a good time to go shopping since several portable and smartphone nav suppliers are offering special Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. You can choose from a variety of portable systems -- some with special themes and celebrity voices -- or get a smartphone nav app for a reduced price over the next few days. If someone on your list feels the Force, a perfect way to let them find their way through a distant galaxy or across town is with one of TomTom's Star Wars themed portable navigation system. TomTom portable nav systems can be customized with graphics bearing the likes of Yoda, C-3PO or Hans Solo -- or Darth Vader if you prefer to drive on the dark side. The voices of these Star Wars characters can also be added to give turn-by-turn directions. And from now until Cyber Monday (November 29), TomTom is offering a $5 online discount on these devices and others, and the company will throw in a celebrity voice for free (regularly $12.95).

Maintenance Minder: Doing a Trial Run With Tire Chains or Cables
If you live where the snow flies you should get some tire chains -- or the more modern cables -- and put them in your car for the winter. Equally important is making sure you know how to put them on ahead of time. Over this holiday weekend, consider giving the installation process a trial run. After all, when you really need them, you will likely be by the side of a snowy highway with chattering teeth and frozen fingers. As a good first step, take at look at this article on how to install chains and cables. On the next page are a few key points that will help you turn this task into a breeze.
Mini and Jaguar Top List of Brands in J.D. Powers Sales Satisfaction Index
Here are two shopping scenarios: You can shop at a store where (eventually) you'll get your purchase for less, but the salespeople will ignore, misinform and even hornswoggle you along the way. Or you can shop where the salespeople are well-informed, attentive and work with you to strike a fair deal. Unless you really love abuse in pursuit of a deal, you're going to go with scenario No. 2. And that's what most respondents to J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Sales Satisfaction Index Study said. Fifty-two percent cited dealer treatment as a reason to purchase their new vehicle from a specific dealer. Thirty-eight percent of buyers cited vehicle price or the deal offered as the reason for selecting their dealer. According to this year's study, Mini dealers are tops in sales satisfaction among mass-market automotive brands. For the third year in a row, Jaguar topped the luxury dealer list.
Savvy Shopper: The Internet Department Helps Walk-ons Too
I tried a car buying experiment this week that saved $1,000 and a whole lot of hassle. I've shopped through the Internet department many times while buying Edmunds long term test cars, but usually this has only involved emailing quotes and confirming offers by phone. This week I walked onto a car lot and asked for a salesman from the Internet department. It was Friday afternoon when I reached the car lot and as I walked into the showroom most of the desks were filled with customers buying cars the good old fashioned way. I overhead phrases that told me that the haggling was in hyper-drive. "How much can you put down?" And, "I'll take your offer to my boss but he probably won't go it." Or, "It's going to take $475 a month to make this deal happen." I was approached by a car salesman but dodged him and went to the receptionist and asked for an Internet salesman.
2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty Tech Testing: I'm Thankful for Bluetooth Audio
There are plenty of electronic features on vehicles to be thankful for, but one of my most recent favorites is Bluetooth audio. I love it when music kicks in automatically if a device is connected -- and you don't have to do anything or connect any wires. I was recently reminded of my gratitude for the feature while driving a 2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty 4x4 Crew Cab pickup. Not the first vehicle you think of when it comes to technology, but it's equipped with Ford's Sync system. Check out the video after the jump to see how easy it is to seamlessly switch from a wired USB connection to Bluetooth audio using an iPhone.

Pick of the Week: 2010 Volkswagen Routan
Chrysler may like to think that it invented the minivan. And while Chrysler does deserve credit for moving minivans into the mainstream, Volkswagen was selling its funky minivans decades earlier. But after VW decided to discontinue its own minivan in 2003 (due mostly to currency concerns), it was left without a competitive entry in the segment. So perhaps it was a bit ironic that VW chose to badge-engineer a Chrysler minivan to sell as its own in 2009, in the form of the Routan. While its Chrysler/Dodge DNA might not be the most elite in the minivan lineage, last year they racked up nearly 200,000 sales, so it is not a bad place to start. Unfortunately, not only have the Chrysler Group minivans been updated for the 2011 model year, but competing models from Honda and Toyota have also undergone total redesigns recently. Without any improvements of its own, VW is left to offer bigger incentives on the Routan.
Top 10 Trimmings for a 2010 Thanksgiving Car Purchase

Pump Prices Hold Steady for Thanksgiving Holiday Travelers
The price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline rose by more than a penny this week to a U.S. average of $2.87 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update. Prices were up more than 23 cents a gallon over this time last year. Diesel prices fell by more than a penny to $3.17 per gallon, which is almost 38 cents higher than a year ago. "Despite gasoline prices about 25 cents more per gallon than a year ago, AAA expects nearly 40 million Americans -- 94 percent of all holiday travelers -- will drive to their Thanksgiving holiday destinations, an increase of 12 percent compared to last year," according to AAA's Fuel Gauge commentator Chris Plaushin. "Travelers can expect the national average of self-serve regular to remain between $2.85 and $2.90 per gallon, with prices higher throughout much of the Pacific and Northeast regions. Those who are driving in the South and Southwest regions should find fuel prices below the national average."
Used Car Corner: Keeping Everything Up to Snuff
Sadly, many car owners don't pay much attention to the owner's manual until they can't figure out how to reset the clock or work the navigation system. But keeping on top of your car's maintenance is a good thing for many reasons. Obviously, doing so will keep your car in top running condition, but it can also prevent problems arising from neglect. Proper maintenance also will keep up your car's value. It's always easier to get a good sales price for your car when you can provide proof that you've properly maintained it. In a similar vein, it's a must to address any and all recalls and TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) that might arise. Edmunds provides a handy tool for keeping tabs on your car's maintenance needs. It also lets you see whether any TSBs or recalls have been issued. Use it and tell your friends about it.
