Located in the beautiful White Mountains of Northeastern Arizona and surrounded by the Apache-Sitgeaves National Forest. There are over 200 miles of streams and 12 lakes.
Nutrioso is located in the center of the White Mountains, just 16 miles southeast of Springerville and 9 miles north of Alpine. It is located on the Coronado Trail, a National Scenic Byway, and Highways 180 and 191. The name is a combination of nutria (otter) and oso (bear). Nutrioso has an elevation of 7,682 feet and sits at the base of Escudilla Mountain
The summer temperatures are cool and the winters are often snow free with days in the 40's even in the coldest months. Prehistoric Indians occupied the area from about 1000 to 1300 A. D., and then came Coronado and his Spanish explorers in 1540. The first English speaking settler was James G. H. Colter, a lumberman from Wisconsin, who came in July of 1875. In 1880 a fort was built to guard against the Apaches. A sawmill was started in 1881 and a schoolhouse was built the following year. A post office was established in 1883.
Nutrioso is located in Unit I, a designated area for hunting by the Arizona Game and Fish. This area has long been recognized as the best place in Arizona for trophy hunts and the best place to see big game. This includes Black Bear, Elk, Pronghorn Antelope, Mule Deer and Turkeys. It is one of the best spots in Arizona for bird watching. Some of the birds that are frequently seen include bald eagles, ducks, geese, osprey, blue grouse, owls, sandpipers, warblers, cardinals, woodpeckers and mockingbirds. The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest surrounds the area with nearly 2 million acres of timber. Escudilla Mountain and the Escudilla Wilderness area are only 5 miles away. Fishing in the area has traditionally been one of the best in the country. Species include rainbow, german brown, brook, and cutthroat trout. Miles of beautiful mountain streams and 11 lakes are within a 30 minute drive from Nutrioso. Quaking aspen and wild flowers in autumn offer a splendid display of color and beauty.
There are year-round activities including several golf courses nearby, skiing and snowboarding at Apache-Sunrise (37 miles), winter snowmobiling and cross-country skiing, ice fishing, many local rodeos, hiking trails, ATV riding, endless miles of primitive roads to explore, horseback riding and shopping. Although land values in the area are still quite reasonable for this part of Arizona, the scarcity of privately owned land and demand may soon make this area's land command premium prices.
