Designed for the vacationer and newcomers as well as members of our local community, Our Town Magazine is about your town, its lifestyle's, people and progress. September and October marks the time of year when the snowbirds return to the Tri- State area. Overwhelmingly, snowbirds are seniors who have physicians and facilities elsewhere responsible for their medical services in the spring and summer. Our medical community again now looks forward to reacquaint ourselves with those whom we care for during the remainder of the year.
Whether a snowbird or year-round senior resident, pain complaints or related conditions remain at or near the top of issues bringing older patients to a physician's attention. Both in the young and not so young, the work-up and testing to find a pain cause (or generator) remains the same. Seniors in general however have special issues and challenges seen not as often in younger patients. Pain related to trauma is a prominent feature in all age groups. Yet starting in middle age, the degeneration of bone, joints, and spine begins to impact the comfort and mobility of most individuals. The expected deterioration of these body regions, along with many additional related or unrelated medical conditions (diabetes, heart and lung disease, etc.), creates challenges in providing reasonable and accessible options to reduce or eliminate pain. For the snowbirds, we must also take into account what had transpired medically while not under our auspices. All of this must be integrated into a seamless transition when we take over your management in the late fall through early spring.
Many patients require just medications to mitigate their pain. Others could benefit from a pain block (a procedure or intervention) designed to identify a pain source or to decrease discomfort. Portions of our patients come to us without a specific diagnosis. In these cases, we are prepared to use our knowledge and expertise to order the tests, perform procedures and recommend the necessary consultations to determine the cause of your pain and how to best treat it.
Seniors also have changes in the metabolism of medications, often due to chronic problems with the heart and lungs, but also the liver, kidneys and other organ systems. This may result in increased sensitivity to pain agents, necessitating more vigilance in monitoring. Pain leads to limitations of mobility, as does aging of the spine and joints. Our brand new office will easily accommodate those who require a little extra room to move about. It was designed as a healing environment for treatment, comfort, privacy and efficient patient care. Our staff will provide assistance and understanding through this entire process.
We’re the only local Pain Medicine service open 5 days a week, offering extended hours and even appointments on some Saturdays. All procedures are done within our office, and depending on insurance many can be performed immediately. You will not have to wait weeks or month to be initially seen, re-examined, or undergo a procedure. We pride ourselves in rarely canceling appointments, and generally run on time.
After a lifetime of work, raising a family, and entering the “Golden Years”, most seniors don't want to be burdened (or be a burden) due to chronic pain. The Tri-State Pain Institute welcomes all year round senior residents and snowbirds, who are in need of pain medicine and related management.
