We pretty much live in a state of adoration around Bookmans. We love cult classics, we love local venues like The Loft Cinema, and we love man-made monsters. By now dedicated Bookmans.com readers all know about Ticket Tuesdays, designed to show our love.

The arts are alive and well in Tucson and we are packing our calendar with movies, metal and music. Among the events we plan to attend are The Loft Film Fest, Cosmo's Moon Open House and an intimate concert featuring local musicians playing Vivaldi.
Drivers by on Speedway have no doubt noticed by now the tents set up in the parking lot of The Loft Cinema as they gear up for their first film festival. The Loft Film Fest is an eight-day celebration of film that began yesterday and will run through November 18, complete with guest appearances by filmmakers and personalities including Larry McMurtry, Diana Osanna, Chris Eyre, Alex Cox, Carlos Reygades. Rosanna Arquette and Griffin Dunne were in attendance for Thursday night's opening film, Martin Scorsese's After Hours.

Bookmans Flagstaff is on the cusp of reopening, and we are ready to start the new era! This last summer marked our twentieth year in Flagstaff, and so, despite all the losses and set-backs, it seems auspicious that we will be rejoining the Northern AZ community in our bright new form. When a few of us walked into the store day before yesterday, we couldn't help but ooo and aaa at the beautiful space. All the cafe walls are windows, filling the front of the store with natural light. The new trade counter area, where all buying and selling will occur, is open and easy to navigate.

Today we honor ten years of service on the part of Steve Paschall. Every one of those years was spent in the Bookmans warehouse where he has been the "backbone of the warehouse and essential in distributing acquisitions to the stores," according to Wharehouse and Online Sales Manager Aaron Thornburg.
Steve's wife of 25 years, Gayle joined Bookmans employees in a celebration with food from Mosaic Cafe and Gayle's own brownies made from a secret family recipe forged through the ages (and posted on the refrigerator of the break room afterwards). After the feast, Steve was presented a plaque and a bonus check, which he dutifully handed over to Gayle.

"I appreciate Bookmans buying a brand new warehouse for my anniversary. I hope to have as much fun in the next ten years as I have in the past ten years," says Steve. Bookmans will be lucky indeed to get another ten years of his employ not just because of his contributions to the company, but also because we enjoy hearing tales of his colorful and action-packed life experiences.
Thank you Steve, for your hard work, reliability, and story telling.

(Admin. Note: This Veterans Day I decided to celebrate by puting to work one of my favorite "Army guys", as my nephew who is now an Army guy and war veteran himself used to call them. Andrew Ballenger has served the country in the military for over 20 years as both an enlisted man and an officer. He's a veteran of both Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and a voracious consumer of military writing.

By Major Andrew Ballenger
In keeping with our nation's celebration of Veterans Day, I offer recommendations of four books of a military genre. I made huge omissions to limit the list to four as some of the best military texts were written by foreign soldiers. In keeping with our own holiday, I've kept it strictly to U.S. military subjects, but added a movie title bonus.

My mom was not a cook. She did encourage us to cook though, and never made the kitchen off limits, which is possibly the best gift I ever received. My mom cooked on holidays. It was a production that we went through two or three times a year. The Ducharme Household Presents: The Holiday Meal! It was memorable, but not for the food or even for the production. It was great because we were together. When I was fifteen, I became a vegetarian. To my parents credit, they were very supportive. I spent a lot of time explaining to people that I was a vegetarian, especially at Thanksgiving. For fourteen years I had the same conversation with my mom. It went like this:
Mom: Its Thanksgiving, what are you going to eat?

Me: Mom, youre having one turkey and seventeen side dishesof VEGETABLES. Ill be fine.
My mom is in no way alone; many people think Thanksgiving is a Turkey Holiday. Turkeys dont and neither do I.
