Cosmetic surgery rates drop by 40% after 2015’s record high

Cosmetic surgery south walesThe British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has revealed cosmetic surgery rates have dropped by a massive 40% in the past year. This follows a record high number of surgeries reported in 2015. This new figure shows procedures are at a near-decade low, with a total drop of 31,000 men and women undergoing surgery.

Non-invasive treatments pushing cosmetic surgery aside

Though some fashion and entertainment experts are claiming the drop in cosmetic surgery procedures is thanks to more natural celebrities rising to fame on social media, it’s actually more to do with the sheer number of non-invasive procedures available.

While surgical procedures have indeed dropped in popularity, non-surgical options such as teeth whitening, Botox and body contouring are soaring in demand.

It’s not hard to see why patients are opting for less invasive procedures. Thanks to gentle, yet effective treatment options such as fat grafting to the face, Botox and water-assisted liposuction, patients can now book and undergo a procedure in their lunch break and head straight back to work.

Experts say drop rate shouldn’t necessarily be celebrated

As well as more people choosing to undergo less invasive treatment options, some experts claim another reason behind the decrease could be financially motivated.

Surgical procedures aren’t cheap, so there’s a chance millennials under the age of 18 could be waiting until they are older and more financially able to afford the surgery they want.

Despite the drop in surgical procedures, breast augmentation remains the most popular cosmetic procedure carried out in the UK, with around 7,732 women opting to go under the knife. For men, rhinoplasty was the top procedure carried out on around 529 patients. Interestingly, the biggest surgical procedure drop was the brow lift, with a massive 71% drop in popularity.

The only surgical procedure to gain in popularity was the tummy tuck for men, which saw a 47% increase up from the last year.

Overall, there are a number of reasons why fewer patients are opting for cosmetic surgery. The excellent choice of non-invasive treatments available is definitely one of the biggest contributors to the surgical decline. However, procedures such as breast augmentation, tummy tucks and rhinoplasty are always going to remain popular.
